Recently, eight-year-old Naomi Townsend from South Croydon proved that true strength lies not just in physical ability but in determination, heart, and kindness. Despite taking a tumble during her eight-kilometre sponsored run at Ashburton Park, Naomi picked herself up, pushed through the pain, and exceeded her fundraising target, raising an incredible £2,365 for the Jamaican hurricane relief fund.
“Even though I fell over and hurt myself, I didn’t give up because I didn’t want to let the people down who sponsored me,” said the determined schoolgirl.
The funds raised will be sent to the Rotary Club of Mandeville in Jamaica, which is working to rebuild communities after the devastating Hurricane Beryl struck the Caribbean earlier this summer, claiming lives and destroying homes. Moved by the tragedy, Naomi knew she had to act.
This isn’t the first time Naomi has risen to a challenge. In 2022, she spearheaded “Project 22,” using her own pocket money to buy ingredients and make meals for rough sleepers in Croydon. Her compassion inspired many, and she raised 100 times more than her original goal.
After finishing her run, a breathless but happy Naomi expressed her gratitude to all who supported her cause. “It’s brilliant that so many people wanted to help Jamaica,” she said. Naomi’s vision goes beyond this race. “As soon as I am old enough, I am going to start my own charity to help the homeless and organise fun activities for old people and children,” she added, showing just how big her dreams and her heart are.
Her parents, Lee and his wife, are beyond proud, with Lee saying, “We try to support Naomi’s vision, encouraging her to dream big and always consider how her actions impact the lives of others.”
Naomi’s story is a shining example of what a young person with a vision and determination can achieve. Her resilience, selflessness, and passion for helping others inspire us all. I look forward to her future by God’s Grace.
